| Urbino is the birth place of the Renaissance (not Florence as those Tuscan bankers would have you know). This World Heritage Site is a jewell of a hilltop town with lesser gems dotted around it's vicinity. Definitely worth a visit to see the ideal renaissance town with it's beautiful Ducal Palace, world standard gallery (with Raphael's breathtaking Mute) and gently ordered streets and piazzas. The town of Gradara is not a WHS but is like a time capsule of a fortified medieval hilltown. It's not all history and culture here, the snazzy beach resorts of Pesaro and fano have got very cool beach resorts along the Adriatic Coast with managed beach concessions with playgrounds, restaurants, pedallos etc. Lots of nightlife along this coast. Every August, Pesaro hosts its annual Rossini Opera Season, a must for opera buffs.
